Friday 27 November, 9-10.30pm: Immerse yourself in the spellbinding energy of forró, with the “Coco Bahia” duo of Jean-Michel Pellegrin and Fabrice Vallot. Originating in the Sertão, the arid and vibrant heart of the Brazilian Nordeste, forró is built around the zabumba, the accordion and the triangle, instruments that sound like a heritage from the ‘corridinhos’ of the Algarve. Both lively and poetic, this music has accompanied Midsummer’s Day celebrations since the 19th century, recounting the loves, dreams and struggles of a land marked by sun and drought. Between fiery dance and tales of everyday life, forró embodies the resilient and festive soul of the Nordeste, before conquering the whole of Brazil through migration.
